THE AMERICAN SONG

A living national memory experience where veteran voices become music, documentary, digital archive, education and legacy.

One creative work. Multiple national lives.

WHY THIS. WHY NOW.

AMERICA WILL ONLY TURN 250 ONCE.

Voices of Freedom 250 is a national initiative to engage, record, preserve and celebrate 250,000 veteran voices across America during the nation’s 250th anniversary and beyond. Every year, veterans are lost and stories disappear with them. This is a once-in-250-years opportunity to capture those voices while the people who lived the history can still tell it.

The American Song is the signature cultural work inside the Honor Gallery: not simply an exhibit and not simply a song, but a national memory experience built from the living voices of veterans themselves.

NOT ONE EXHIBIT.A living national memory project built to travel, grow and endure.
NOT ONE SONG.A cultural work expressed through music, film, archives, education and public experience.
NOT ONE ANNIVERSARY.America’s 250th is the ignition point—not the expiration date.

THE FULL AMERICAN STORY

HISTORICAL COMPLETENESS MATTERS.

America’s military story was written by people from every part of the nation. The American Song follows that history where it leads—across communities, branches, eras and generations—so the record reflects the people who actually served.

“Different people. Different paths. One American story.”

Asian American · Native Hawaiian · Pacific Islander · American Indian · Alaska Native · Black / African American · Hispanic / Latino · Arab American and Middle Eastern / North African · Women Veterans · Immigrant and First-Generation American Veterans · Veterans with Disabilities · Rural and Historically Underserved Communities · Every Branch · Every Era

The American Song does not assign value by identity. It preserves the history of Americans who served. Participation is open to veterans of every background, branch, era and community.

ONE STORY

OCTOBER 1944

VOSGES MOUNTAINS · FRANCESOME STORIES DEFINE A NATION. THIS IS ONE OF THEM.
October 1944, Vosges Mountains, France. Some stories define a nation. This is one of them. A battalion of American soldiers was surrounded behind enemy lines. The 141st Infantry Lost Battalion of the 36th Division was cut off, outnumbered, and running low on supplies in the Vosges. Isolated. Outnumbered. But not forgotten. The 442nd was called. Japanese American soldiers fighting for a country that had incarcerated many of their own families. Their families were behind barbed wire. They went anyway. Through steep mountains, in brutal conditions, they fought their way to the trapped battalion. Americans rescuing Americans. The 442nd reached the Lost Battalion, broke through enemy lines, and brought their fellow Americans home. This is one American story. But it does not end here. One story. Five lives: Honor Gallery, exhibitions that inspire; Song, original music that endures; Film, documentaries that reach; Archive, histories that live; Classroom, generations that learn. Now imagine 250,000 voices. Different eras. Different communities. Different journeys. One America. The American Song. Real people. Real stories. A stronger tomorrow.

FROM VOICE TO NATIONAL LEGACY

HOW A VETERAN STORY BECOMES PART OF THE AMERICAN SONG.

1

VOICE CAPTURED

Veterans tell their stories in their own words.

2

HISTORY PRESERVED

Artifacts, memories and context enter the record.

3

MUSIC PRODUCED

Veteran voices and American musical traditions inform original work.

4

DOCUMENTARY CREATED

The people, process and choices are captured on film.

5

DIGITAL ARCHIVE BUILT

Voices, history, music and educational material remain accessible.

6

SHARED WITH THE NATION

The work travels, teaches, performs and continues beyond 2027.

The event ends. The voices remain.

WHY THIS IS DIFFERENT

THIS IS MORE THAN AN EXHIBIT. IT IS A NATIONAL MEMORY EXPERIENCE.

VETERAN-CREATED

The source material begins with veterans and families themselves—not with an institution deciding their story for them.

HISTORICALLY GROUNDED

The work follows the breadth of American military service across real histories, communities, eras and branches.

MUSIC AT THE CENTER

Music is not decoration. It becomes one of the languages through which living history becomes shared culture—alongside oral history, documentary, archive and education.

BUILT TO ENDURE

The tour ends. The voices remain through archive, education, future performance, digital access and national commemoration.
